Youngstown Steel Heritage is a nonprofit, volunteer run organization dedicated to the preservation of the history and technology of the steel industry in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania.  Our facility is located in Youngstown, OH where we work to preserve, restore and operate various pieces of historic steelmaking equipment.

Inside our main building is the Tod Engine, a 260 ton, 4,000 horsepower rolling mill steam engine originally used at the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Brier Hill Works.  This engine is currently being restored to operation.  Also in the building is Morgan overhead crane No. 613, built in 1893 and is perhaps the oldest electric overhead crane in the US.  Outside we have a 24" gauge railroad to operate the remaining fleet of Jones & Laughlin Steel steam locomotives that were originally used at the J&L Pittsburgh Works on the South Side.  Several of our narrow gauge cars came from Carpenter Steel in Reading, PA.

We have regular operating and volunteer sessions throughout the year where members can participate in our restoration efforts as well as assist in the operation of our historic equipment.  We also host a series of "Steam Locomotive Experiences" where you can come learn how to operate a steam locomotive and run it on our railroad. YSH is one of the only nonprofits in the US that focuses on the restoration and operation of historic steelmaking equipment, making us rather unique in the realm of industrial preservation.

It all starts with your membership.  Click on the JOIN US tab to get started!
